What is a Cataract?

A Cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye which leads to a decrease in vision. Cataracts are most commonly due to aging but may sometimes occur due to other conditions. 

Common Symptoms

Common symptoms include loss of clarity with possible smoky / foggy vision; sensitivity to bright light, glare, reduced night vision and colour perception. 

Pre-Op Assessment

On the day of your consultation a full Ophthalmic Exam will be performed to see if there any other problems besides cataracts, which may influence your visual outcome.

The curvature and the length of your eye (A-scan) will be measured to calculate the power of the new lens implant to be used to replace your cloudy lens.

The Doctor will outline the cataract procedure and recommend the lens to achieve the best visual result.

Cataract Surgery

Cataract Surgery is a safe and highly successful day procedure. It takes approximately 30 minutes. Cataract Surgery is usually performed under local anaesthetic using eye drops and light sedation given by an anaesthetist.



Complications

Although serious complications following Cataract Surgery are rare, in some cases, they do occur. Possible risks include:

1. Infection in the eye is a serious but rare (1:1,000) complication

2. Retinal detachment (1:400)

3. Corneal/Retinal Swelling 

4. Further Surgery may occasionally be needed to manage some complications

Most complications resolve with additional treatment and time.
