GLAUCOMA TREATMENT MELBOURNE

Although there is no cure for Glaucoma, in most cases it can be controlled successfully with the use of eye drops, laser treatment or surgery.

EYE DROPS are traditionally the most common form of treatment and have a high success rate of controlling open angle glaucoma. However some drops have side effects and are not effective in all patients. It can be highly demanding for patients and some may have difficulty with compliance.

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)

SLT is a simple, gentle and painless yet highly effective laser procedure that reduces the intraocular pressure after the laser is applied onto the trabecular meshwork. It success rate is similar to when using glaucoma drops, without the side effects and compliance concerns. It is safe and not associated with systemic side effects. SLT uses short pulses of low energy light to target the melanin, or pigment, in specific cells of affected eye. It, also stimulates the body’s natural mechanisms to enhance outflow of the fluid in your eye

SLT is now first line recommended treatment for many types of Glaucoma’s.

Treatment may need to be repeated as the effect can wear off.

iStent inject

Micro-bypass Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MBGS) is new surgical technique for glaucoma control with lower risk than traditional glaucoma surgery.

iStent inject is the most commonly used of the MBGS techniques. It consists of two small titanium stents that are implanted into the eye during cataract surgery or as standalone surgery. It allows the aqueous humor in the front of the eye to directly drain into Schlemm’s canal improving the eye’s natural outflow. The iStents bypass any obstruction in the trabecular meshwork covering the canal. Following the surgery, patients may be able to stop or reduce the number of eye drops they use to lower their eye pressure.

The iStent inject is most suitable for adult patients with mild-to moderate open-angle Glaucoma, but may also benefit other types of Glaucoma.

If these treatments are not successful in controlling the Glaucoma then traditional trabeculectomy drainage surgery, or similar procedure, may be needed.
